The main symptom is a slow, painless loss of visual acuity. Blurred vision and reduced contrast vision occur, so that the environment disappears in the fog. People suffering from cataracts often complain of increasing sensitivity to glare, since the light beam is diffusely scattered by the lens opacity.

Occasionally, monocular double images occur, which are still present when closing the partner eye. In addition, halos are observed around light sources. The light-dark adaptation of the eye is slowed and the ability to see spatially may be impaired.

Lens types

Standard lenses (cataract correction)

Standard lenses are artificial lenses made of flexible material. They are a monofocal lens. Due to the single focal point, patients can opt for sharp near or distance vision. The costs are fully covered by health insurance.

Toric lenses (cataract correction)

Toric lenses can correct distortions caused by astigmatism. As a rule, they reduce the distortion so that driving without a visual aid becomes possible. Toric lenses are also available multifocal.

Aspherical lenses (cataract correction)

Aspherical lenses compensate for a certain aberration and improve contrast vision - especially at twilight. They are often combined with a UV and blue light filter.

Multifocal lenses (cataract correction)

Multifocal lenses have multiple focal points. They allow largely sharp vision at different distances.
