Eye inflammations
Typical symptoms of eye inflammation are red, swollen or light-sensitive eyes, an unpleasant foreign body sensation, increased tearing and sticky eyelids. If these symptoms occur, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist to clarify the cause and initiate targeted treatment. At the Wollishofen Eye Center in Zurich, we provide competent and individual advice on all questions relating to eye inflammation.
Causes of eye inflammation
The causes of eye inflammation are often bacteria or viruses that can enter the eye and infect the conjunctiva. The symptoms are varied: they include watery, painful or reddened eyes, itching, swollen or sticky eyelids and increased sensitivity to light. While bacterial inflammation often results in a green-yellow mucus, a viral infection usually causes a watery discharge.
Bacteria or viruses can enter the eye through draughts, contaminated hands or contact with infected people, for example. Dry eyes, for example due to heating air, also increase the risk of inflammation. Other risk factors include wearing (especially soft) contact lenses or inadequate hygiene when handling contact lenses.
If eye inflammation is recognized and treated early, it usually heals within a few days and leaves no permanent damage to the eye.
