Cataract (cataract) - eye pressure measurement for early detection

Cataracts are not treatable with medication. The only effective treatment option is surgery. During cataract or cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye that has become cloudy is replaced with a modern plastic lens, thus restoring vision.

Effectively treat lens opacity (cataract) with gentle surgery

Cataract refers to the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. When young, the lens is usually clear. Over the course of life, it becomes increasingly discolored, thick and rigid, thus preventing good vision.

The advanced cataract can even be seen with the naked eye as a whitish glow behind the pupil. Such pronounced cases make normal everyday life almost impossible. Visual performance is reduced to such an extent that it is tantamount to blindness and thus leads to fixed gaze. This is where the name "cataract" comes from. Surgery is the only effective therapy. The clouded lens is replaced by an artificial lens implant.

Examples of cataract - cataract

Cataract Without impairment

The lens of the eye is clear and transparent at a young age. With increasing age, a slow clouding and hardening of the lens of the eye takes place.

Symptoms

The main symptom is a slow, painless loss of visual acuity. Blurred vision and reduced contrast vision occur, so that the environment disappears in the fog. People suffering from cataracts often complain of increasing sensitivity to glare, since the light beam is diffusely scattered by the lens opacity.

Occasionally, monocular double images occur, which are still present when closing the partner eye. In addition, halos are observed around light sources. The light-dark adaptation of the eye is slowed and the ability to see spatially may be impaired.

Cataract - the only therapy is surgery

The only effective treatment option is surgical intervention.

In cataract or cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye that has become cloudy is replaced with a modern plastic lens, thus restoring vision. Together we will decide which treatment method and which type of lens will meet your needs.

Early detection

With regular check-ups, I can observe and document the development and progression of the natural clouding of the eye lens and suggest the optimal time for surgery. The decision whether a cataract operation should be performed is up to the patient and depends on the degree of suffering or the impairment in everyday life.

Prophylaxis

Cataract is a natural sign of aging that can affect anyone sooner or later. There are no preventive measures, but there is an effective therapy.

Cataract surgery is a short operation with great effect. It is the most frequently performed operation on humans and thus has been proven millions of times.

Lens types

Standard lenses (cataract correction)

Standard lenses are artificial lenses made of flexible material. They are a monofocal lens. Due to the single focal point, patients can opt for sharp near or distance vision. The costs are fully covered by health insurance.

Toric lenses (cataract correction)

Toric lenses can correct distortions caused by astigmatism. As a rule, they reduce the distortion so that driving without a visual aid becomes possible. Toric lenses are also available multifocal.

Aspherical lenses (cataract correction)

Aspherical lenses compensate for a certain aberration and improve contrast vision - especially at twilight. They are often combined with a UV and blue light filter.

Multifocal lenses (cataract correction)

Multifocal lenses have multiple focal points. They allow largely sharp vision at different distances.

Anatomy of the human eye

Optic nerve (lat. Nervus opticus) in the eye

The optic nerve is responsible for ensuring that information from the retina reaches the brain. The concentrated bundle of millions of nerve fibers converts the light stimuli from the retina into impulses and sends them to ...

Inner eye shell

The inner shell forms the retina. It is used to receive light stimuli. The light impressions are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve and processed there.

Blind spot (papilla)

The so-called blind spot is the point in the eye where the retina is interrupted and merges with the optic nerve. Since there are no light receptors at this point, ...
