Early detection for children's eyes

Healthy eyes are the basis for a child's development and learning. Many vision problems can be detected and treated with an early check-up. At the Wollishofen Eye Center, we offer special eye checks for children - so that your child can discover the world clearly and carefree. Find out what parents should look out for and why a timely examination is so important.

Early detection and prevention for children's eyes - healthy eyes right from the start

When is an appointment recommended?

We recommend the first ophthalmologic examination at the age of 3 years - or earlier if abnormalities occur. Early clarification is particularly important for

  • Babies, infants, children, adolescents and adults with suspected strabismus

  • Children from families with eye-related pre-existing conditions such as high defective vision, strabismus, amblyopia (weak vision), nystagmus or organic eye diseases

  • Children and young people with developmental or partial performance disorders (e.g. reading and spelling difficulties, perceptual disorders)

  • Children from families with eye diseases, especially after cataract operations (cataracts) or with eye muscle disorders and double vision

  • Children with problems with close-up work, such as blurred vision, headaches or eye pain

A timely examination helps to detect possible vision problems at an early stage and to treat them optimally.

Orthoptics

Orthoptics is a specialized branch of ophthalmology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of binocular vision. These primarily include strabismus, eye movement disorders, double vision and visual impairments such as amblyopia. Orthoptists specifically examine the interaction of both eyes, the position of the eyes and the mobility of the eye muscles.

Using modern examination methods, our orthoptists can also detect complex squints and functional disorders at an early stage - in both children and adults. The aim of orthoptic therapy is to improve binocular vision, treat visual impairments and alleviate complaints such as headaches or eye fatigue.

An individual therapy plan is drawn up for each child in close cooperation with our ophthalmologists and the parents. This allows targeted training, visual exercises or, if necessary, further ophthalmological measures to be optimally tailored to the child's needs.

Why preventive check-ups are so important

In children, early detection of eye diseases is particularly important in order to effectively prevent lifelong visual impairment. We therefore recommend regular ophthalmological check-ups from infancy and early childhood. Many visual disorders such as short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism can be reliably detected from the age of 18 months. Timely diagnosis and targeted treatment can create the best conditions for healthy visual development.

Ophthalmology and orthoptics (vision school) for visual disorders of children and adolescents

Children's eyes

Early detection and eye control in children

Routine eye examination of newborns and children is therefore recommended. As early as 18 months of age, any vision problems can be detected in order to identify defects such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (astigmatism, astigmatism) and treat them at an early stage. An eye examination by an ophthalmologist is recommended at the latest at 30 to 42 months of age.

Vision development in children's eyes

In the first years of life, any defective vision in children, strabismus or an organic disorder can lead to permanent visual impairment. The earlier an eye disorder is detected, the greater the chances that normal vision development can be achieved.

Strabismus or squint

Strabismus is one of the most common visual disorders in children. Almost 3% of children are affected. Strabismus can occur due to lens opacities, nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and must always be clarified and treated accurately. Otherwise, the weaker eye is neglected by the brain and an irreversible visual disorder (amblyopia) develops.
