Visual field testing is primarily used for the early detection of glaucoma. During a visual field examination (perimetry), the outer and inner boundaries of the visual field are assessed, as well as the sensitivity of visual function outside the point of fixation.
The visual field comprises the area of vision that can be perceived with the eyes and head kept still. A rough assessment of the visual field is performed using the simple confrontation test, in which the patient’s visual field is compared with that of the examiner. Precise visual field measurement is carried out using computerized perimetry.
