A healthy optic nerve head is slightly indented inward. The optic nerve transmits our sensory impressions from the eye to the brain. Blood vessels run through its center to supply the retina. The optic nerve head, known as the optic disc, refers to the point where the optic nerve exits the eye. This area is filled with nerve fibers, blood vessels, and supporting cells and is examined particularly for glaucoma diagnosis using an ophthalmoscope or a magnifying lens.
