Intraocular Pressure Examination

During the preventive examination for glaucoma, intraocular pressure measurement (tonometry) is performed and the optic nerve head is assessed. The examination can determine whether intraocular pressure has increased and whether there is suspicion of glaucoma.

How Does Elevated Intraocular Pressure Develop?

The eye maintains an intraocular pressure that is created by the continuous flow of aqueous humor. The aqueous humor flows from the back into the anterior chamber of the eye and is then drained from the eye into the bloodstream. If the balance between inflow and outflow is disrupted, the internal pressure can increase, which may be an indication of glaucoma. The preventive examination should be performed from the age of 40.
