Eye Inflammations
Typical symptoms of eye inflammation include red, swollen, or light-sensitive eyes, an unpleasant foreign body sensation, increased tearing, and crusty eyelids. If these signs occur, it is recommended to seek an ophthalmological examination to clarify the cause and initiate targeted treatment. At the Augencenter Wollishofen in Zurich, we provide expert and individual advice on all questions regarding eye inflammations.
Causes of Eye Inflammations
The causes of eye inflammation are often bacteria or viruses that enter the eye and can affect the conjunctiva. The symptoms are varied: these include watery, painful, or red eyes, itching, swollen or crusty eyelids, and increased sensitivity to light. While bacterial inflammation often presents with green-yellow mucus, a viral infection usually shows a watery discharge.
Bacteria or viruses can enter the eye through drafts, contaminated hands, or contact with infected persons, for example. Dry eyes, caused by dry heating air for instance, also increase the risk of inflammation. Other risk factors include wearing contact lenses (especially soft ones) or insufficient hygiene when handling contact lenses.
If eye inflammation is detected and treated early, it usually heals within a few days and leaves no permanent damage to the eye.
