Preventive care and eye diseases in children

Children as patients at the Augencenter Wollishofen: With examination methods suitable for children, we can detect a concrete suspicion of a visual disorder at an early stage and treat it promisingly. Early detection is very important.

Children's consultation at the Wollishofen Eye Center

When is an appointment recommended?

We recommend the first eye examination at the age of 3 years or earlier if there are any abnormalities. Babies, toddlers, children, adolescents and adults with suspected strabismus

Children from families with eye-related pre-existing conditions (high refractive error, strabismus, amblyopia, nystagmus, organic eye disease).

Children and adolescents with developmental and partial performance disorders (reading and writing disabilities, perceptual disorders

Children from families with ocular diseases (cataract surgery with eye muscle disorders and double vision)

Children with problems with close work (blurred vision, headaches, eye pain)

Orthoptics

Orthoptics is a specialty of ophthalmology.

Our orthoptists specialize in disorders of binocular vision (strabismus). Their expertise enables them to differentiate between complex strabismus images. This makes it possible to diagnose strabismus, an eye movement disorder or a visual impairment in patients of all ages.

In consultation with Dr. Dominique Mustur and the parents, therapies are individually planned and implemented for the children (patients).

Early detection of visual disorders in children and adolescents

In children, early detection of eye diseases is extremely important in order to prevent lifelong visual impairment with the right therapy. Routine eye examinations of newborns and children are therefore recommended. As early as 18 months of age, any vision problems can be detected in order to identify defects such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (astigmatism, astigmatism) and treat them at an early stage.

Early detection and eye control in children

Routine eye examination of newborns and children is therefore recommended. As early as 18 months of age, any vision problems can be detected in order to identify defects such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism (astigmatism, astigmatism) and treat them at an early stage. An eye examination by an ophthalmologist is recommended at the latest at 30 to 42 months of age.

Vision development in children's eyes

In the first years of life, any defective vision in children, strabismus or an organic disorder can lead to permanent visual impairment. The earlier an eye disorder is detected, the greater the chances that normal vision development can be achieved.

Strabismus or squint

Strabismus is one of the most common visual disorders in children. Almost 3% of children are affected. Strabismus can occur due to lens opacities, nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism and must always be clarified and treated accurately. Otherwise, the weaker eye is neglected by the brain and an irreversible visual disorder (amblyopia) develops.
